Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has commercialized a 2016-size (2.0 x 1.6 mm) crystal unit*1 (XRCGD series). With a frequency precision of ±20 ppm, it is able to support the wireless communications indispensable for mobile devices, including Wi-Fi/Bluetooth® and RadioFrequency/BaseBand.
The product was developed jointly with Tokyo Denpa Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "Tokyo Denpa") , which became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Murata on August 1 of this year.
Murata first commercialized the HCR (Hybrid CRystal) in 2009, after developing it jointly with Tokyo Denpa. While Murata's ceramic resonators remain popular in automotive and consumer applications, the introduction of the HCR has allowed Murata to expand into the HDD market, where higher precision is required. Thanks to its alloy fusion sealing method, the newly commercialized XRCGD series can support wireless communication applications, an area that requires higher precision than HCR can offer. To prepare the way for full-scale entry into the mobile devices market, Murata plans to use the XRCGD series as a base for continued development of smaller components such as crystal units, crystal units with thermistors,*2 and TCXOs.*3
Features
-
High-precision performance due to high-grade quartz crystal components provided by Tokyo Denpa.
While the initial frequency precision for ceramic resonators can be plus or minus a few hundred to a few thousand ppm, for a crystal unit it is about ±20 ppm.
-
First in the industry to adopt a fusion sealing method that uses an alloy in the metal cap structure.
Murata's proprietary packaging technology, unavailable in existing crystal units, enables superior quality and cost performance, and is suitable for mass production. At the same time, it achieves superior miniaturization, contributing to high-density mounting and slimming of the set, which can be expected to accelerate further in the future.
-
RoHS-compliant and lead-free (phase 3)
-
Accommodates lead-free solder mounting
Applications
Mobile devices, wearable computers,*4 and similar markets that require miniaturized components

External Size
*1
|
Crystal unit:
|
An electronic component that oscillates at a specific frequency that utilizes the piezoelectric properties of quartz crystal. It can generate high precision signals and is used as the source of clock signal for digital circuits.
|
*2
|
Crystal unit with thermistor:
|
A product that incorporates a crystal unit and thermistor in a single package. This makes it possible to detect the temperature closer to the crystal unit.
|
*3
|
TCXO:
|
A product that incorporates a crystal unit and temperature compensation circuit in a single package. Very high temperature characteristics can be obtained by incorporating a temperature compensation circuit with temperature characteristics that are the opposite of the characteristics of the crystal unit.

Wearable computer:
|
A portable computer that is worn by the bearer.
